Under Pressure? – Tyre Safety Month 2025

Protyre Autocare is supporting TyreSafe’s campaign for Tyre Safety Month 2025, ‘Under Pressure’.

We’re backing the campaign by encouraging all of our customers not to forget to check their tyres among the juggle of life’s competing demands.

Life has enough pressures – don’t let tyres be one

TyreSafe’s campaign is based on new research into how stress and life pressures affect vehicle maintenance habits.

The research found that, while people juggle competing demands, tyre checks are often pushed aside – increasing risks for drivers, passengers, and other road users.

One of the findings of the research was that fewer than half of drivers (46%) check their tyre pressures at least once a month.

Get in the habit of regular vehicle safety checks

We understand that drivers with busy lives can easily overlook completing the quick checks that support road safety and help to protect all road users.

That’s why we’re encouraging all drivers to get in the habit of regularly checking the Air pressure, Condition and Tread of their tyres:

Air pressure

Correct tyre pressures reduce the risk of experiencing a rapid deflation and also ensure optimal braking and handling.

Correctly inflated tyres also last longer and use less fuel.

You can find the recommended pressure in your door shut, fuel filler cap or owner’s manual and you can top up with air at most service stations.

Learn how and when you should check your tyre pressure.

Condition

Check your tyres for any bulges, lumps or cuts and remove any stones or objects from the tread.

If something doesn’t look right, have it inspected immediately by a tyre professional.

Make sure that you carry out these checks once a month, and before long journeys.

Checking Tyre Thread

Tread

Your tyres’ tread is critical for acceleration, braking, steering and cornering.

The legal minimum limit for car tyre tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread around its entire circumference.

To check your tread, place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the coin is obscured, then your tread depth is above the legal limit.

If the outer band of the coin is visible, then your tyres may be illegal and unsafe.

Use our guide to learn how to check your tyre tread depth.

Remember this proven three-step approach from TyreSafe and check your tyres regularly to reduce risk and improve road safety.

Why Tyre Safety Month Matters?

Tyre Safety Month is dedicated to highlighting the essential role tyres play in road safety, with the ultimate goal of reducing tyre-related incidents.

The event shines a spotlight on the importance of regular tyre maintenance, encouraging all drivers to take action.

Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said “Each October, TyreSafe leads the UK’s largest tyre safety awareness campaign, Tyre Safety Month. In 2025, our theme Under Pressure responds to the growing mental and financial pressures felt across all sections of society.

“We know that when life feels overwhelming, routine vehicle checks can easily be neglected – yet something as basic as ignoring underinflated tyres can lead to life-threatening consequences.”
