What Is an Air Con Regas?

An air con regas, also known as an aircon recharge, involves removing the used refrigerant gas and replacing it with new gas and lubricant to restore your system’s cooling power.

Over time, AC systems naturally lose around 10% of refrigerant gas per year, making them less efficient. If your vents are blowing warm air or performance has dropped, a regas can quickly restore cold airflow and improve fuel efficiency by reducing strain on your engine.

At Protyre, our technicians carry out aircon regas services with precision, using the correct gas type for your vehicle and checking for leaks before refilling.

When To Regas Your Air Conditioning

Most manufacturers recommend a car air conditioning recharge every two years to maintain optimal cooling and prevent system wear. However, many drivers wait until it’s no longer blowing cold, which can reduce comfort and increase long-term costs.

Signs your AC system may need a regas include:

  • Airflow that isn’t as cold as it used to be

  • Windows taking longer to demist

  • A musty smell from the vents

  • No noticeable change when the AC is switched on

  • You haven’t serviced the AC system in over 24 months

  • Don’t wait until summer! Get ahead of any issues and book your aircon service online today.

Which Air Con Gas Does My Car Use?

There are two main types of refrigerant gas used in vehicle air conditioning systems:

  • R134A – Used in cars manufactured before 2017

  • R1234YF – Required for vehicles made from 1st January 2017 onwards, and is more environmentally friendly

In an attempt to fight global warming, vehicle manufacturers have not been allowed to use the older R134A gas since 2017 as it is believed to be more damaging to the environment.

If you're unsure which gas your vehicle uses, our team can help. Simply enter your registration online to find the right gas type and get an instant quote. Protyre technicians are fully certified with the Safe Handling of Refrigerants Certificate and carry out each regas to manufacturer specifications, including a vacuum test to check for leaks before recharging your system.

Frequently Asked Questions about Air Con Regas:

No, air con regas isn’t included in the standard car service. Although maintaining your air conditioning is essential, it falls outside your typical car service because regassing involves more than just a top-up. It includes checking for leaks, topping up the system lubricant, and ensuring there are no structural faults. It’s a specialist process that sits outside of a standard annual check-up, and that’s why it carries an individual service cost.

Regassing is the process of refilling your AC system with refrigerant. It involves removing the old gas and replacing it with new refrigerant to restore cold airflow. If your AC isn’t cooling properly, a regas is the first thing to consider. The process usually takes under an hour and can significantly improve performance. If cold air still doesn’t return, a technician can check for other underlying issues.

It’s not recommended to regas your air con yourself. Our team of professionals at Protyre have the right tools to safely handle refrigerant gas and detect leaks. DIY attempts can be unsafe – refrigerant contact with skin or eyes can cause freeze burns. For safety and accuracy, it’s best left to a certified technician which you can find at one of our local garages.

If the air isn’t as cold as it used to be, it’s time for a regas. A drop in cooling performance or no change in airflow temperature when the AC is on are clear signs. If you can't remember the last time your system was serviced, it’s likely overdue. At Protyre, we offer a free air con check to help you decide.

Every two years is the general recommendation. Most manufacturers suggest servicing your car’s AC every 24 months. Waiting until it stops working won’t damage the system right away, but reduced cooling, longer window demisting, and increased fuel use can make driving less comfortable. Regular checks help avoid these issues.

If you don’t regas your air con system, the system will lose efficiency and may become damaged over time. Without regular regassing, your vehicle’s AC won’t cool effectively and will struggle in hot weather. It can also take longer to demist your windows in winter. Long-term neglect can lead to cracked pipes and seized components, resulting in costly repairs.

The cost of air con regas depends on your vehicle. You can find out the exact cost for air conditioning regas by using our online tool - just enter your vehicle registration, and we'll provide the price. You can also book your aircon service online at a time that suits you best. If you have any other questions or need assistance, please give a call to your local garage.

Most air con regas services take 30–45 minutes. It’s a quick and convenient appointment that can restore comfort to your drive. At Protyre Autocare, we aim to get you back on the road with cold air and peace of mind, fast.

Use it regularly, get it serviced, and replace filters when needed.Running your air con even in winter keeps the system lubricated. Annual servicing and filter changes also help maintain performance. At Protyre, we offer professional air con maintenance to help extend your system’s lifespan.
