What is a run flat tyre?

A run flat tyre, also known as an RFT, is designed to allow a car to safely continue driving if the tyre is punctured or experiences a drop in tyre pressure. The tyre is designed with reinforced sidewalls that prevent the tyre from collapsing, allowing the driver to continue for a limited distance at a reduced speed.

Bridgestone

Bridgestone run flat tyres utilise the latest technology in their tyre design to ensure that your tyres can temporarily continue driving in the event of a puncture.

Michelin

Michelin run flat tyres, typically referred to as ‘Michelin Zero Pressure’, utilise reinforced sidewalls to reliably support your vehicle when tyre pressure is lost.

Pirelli

The Pirelli run flat tyre range, known as ‘Self Supporting Run Flat’, provides continued mobility if the vehicle suffers a puncture whilst on the road, making them a popular choice amongst drivers.

Dunlop

British-based Dunlop is renowned for developing and manufacturing high-quality tyres. With Dunlop’s Self-Supporting Technology range, their durable tyres provide an extra layer of safety if a tyre is punctured whilst driving.

Continental

Continental run flat tyres utilise their own Self-Supporting Runflat technology to ensure you remain mobile even after a puncture, allowing you to continue to your nearest garage for a tyre replacement.

Run flat tyres: FAQs

No, run flat tyres cannot be repaired because the reinforced structure and sidewalls make it difficult to spot any secondary damage. Therefore, run flat tyres need to be replaced if they are damaged.

The easiest way to find out is to check your owner’s manual, as this should tell you the type of tyres your vehicle is fitted with. If you do have run flat tyres, it should also explain the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which lets you know when tyres lose pressure due to a puncture.

The best run flat tyres are so good at supporting the car that you might not even notice if you get a puncture, but this puts you at risk. For this reason, you should never use run flat car tyres unless your vehicle has a TPMS.

Many brands also mark their tyres so you can visibly see that they are run flat. They may simply say “run flat” on the side or have codes such as RFT for run flat tyre, but this will vary by brand.

Run flat tyre prices vary. Generally, they are roughly the same price as conventional car tyres. However, you may expect to pay more for a run flat tyre from brands specialising in sports performance, extra load or winter conditions.

If your car was factory-shipped with run flat tyres, most manufacturers recommend that you continue to use them. In our experience, most vehicles can switch to conventional tyres, but some need a few tweaks. If you’re planning to make this change, we can contact the manufacturer to check for you – so it’s best to get in touch with us first.
