Types of Motorcycle Tyres

At Protyre, we offer tyres for scooters, motocross, off-road, adventure, sports, sport touring, street racing, and custom bikes. All the motorcycle tyres we sell come from the best manufacturers and are fitted in our trusted local Protyre motorcycle garages across the UK.

When it comes to the design of motorcycle tyres, there are three main construction types available:

Cross-ply tyres

Cross-ply motorcycle tyres are those that require an inner tube. They are crafted from a weave of cords beneath the rubber, which makes them strong and thick. The inner tube allows for a comfortable ride, which makes them common on cruisers and slower bikes.

Bias belted tyres

Bias belt tyres are a type of cross-ply that feature extra cords within the centre of the tyre to support extra weight. They are typically used for heavier motorcycles such as cruisers, touring bikes and some classic models.

Radial Tyres

Radial tyres are a newer design that does not require an inner tube. Instead, they feature a central belt that holds the rest of the tyre in place. This type of motorcycle tyre is very rigid, which helps improve steadiness during extreme cornering and at high speeds. Radial tyres are often used on sports motorcycles because they respond well to the rider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Motorcycle tyres can last anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 miles, depending on the type of tyre, how you ride, and the roads you ride on.

Sportbike tyres wear out quicker because they’re designed for performance, while touring or cruiser tyres tend to last longer. To get the most life out of your tyres, make sure to check the pressure regularly and keep an eye on the tread.

Even if you haven’t hit the mileage limit, it’s a good idea to replace tyres that are more than 5 years old, as they can harden and lose grip over time.

No, you do not need to replace both motorcycle tyres at the same time. As the rear tyre typically wears faster, it is common to just replace the rear tyre if the front tyre is in good condition.

However, if you find the front tyre shows any signs of damage, is older than five years old or has excessive wear, you should replace both tyres at the same time to ensure safety when riding.

It is not advisable to mix tyre brands on a motorcycle, and you should stick to the same brand on both front and rear tyres. As motorcycle brands are designed to work in pairs, mixing different brands can lead to issues with handling, unusual wear, and make the ride feel uneven or unpredictable.

If you are looking to replace a single tyre but cannot find the right match, it is advised to replace both tyres to ensure your safety.

The cost of motorcycle tyres can vary from £20 for cheap motorcycle tyres to over £200 for premium tyres. At Protyre, we stock a range of motorbike tyres that are suitable for all budgets, whether you’re looking for branded tyres, premium tyres, or more affordable tyres.

Certain bikes call for specialised tyres, while others might not necessarily benefit from having the best-quality tyres installed. So, if in doubt, call our experts on 0333 060 4019 to learn more.

Motorcycles that are over 50cc must have a minimum tread depth of 1 millimetre around the whole circumference of the motorcycle tyre.

However, it is recommended not to let motorcycle treads drop below 2mm, as this can compromise security and safety. Tyres with a low tread depth will reduce road contact and stability on the motorcycle. Therefore, it’s recommended to change your tyres to ensure maximum safety.

If you're unsure of how to test your motorbike’s tread depth, you can use the 20p test to make sure your tyre tread is legal. Just insert a 20p piece into the tread and if the duller outside rim of the tails face of the coin is still visible, your tyres are likely below the legal limit.

Motorcycle tyres are the rubber outer rims of the wheels of motorbikes. Designed and built to be durable, they feature different construction types and tread patterns to suit different types of motorcycles and surface conditions.

Whether you ride a Harley-Davidson or a sports bike, motorcycle tyres are built to ensure performance. They should combine ride comfort with steering precision and have exceptional handling and traction. What’s more, they need to offer excellent water displacement for maximum safety when your bike is cutting through wet weather.

By Size: Raised writing on the sidewall of the motorbike tyre displays the width, height, rim size, speed rating, and load rating – crucial information when searching for motorbike tyres for sale.

Your Riding Experience: The roads you ride, the bike you own, the luggage you haul, passengers on pillion, the performance you expect, and your riding style will all also dictate the type of bike tyres you buy. Therefore, you should consider this when purchasing new tyres.
